I'll Admit It, I'm Not the Chef in This House.
Monday, August 30, 2010 at 12:32PM
That's not to say I can't cook. I can. I can cook curries, and fry ups, and easy things like french toast and such.
When it comes to proper cooking though, my fiance, Dean, is the person who does the majority of the cooking in our house.
It's not that I don't like cooking for him, just that the (vast) majority of things I cook are with chicken, and it just doesn't agree with him. Makes him very unwell even when he has just a small amount.
So today he has been making a big pot of carrot and coriander soup, which is almost done now... yum!
The kitchen is definitely his domain in our house. He cooks in it, cleans up after himself (I know!! YAY for a man who's house-trained!), and generally makes sure that we're eating out of a clean kitchen.
Puts me to shame he does!
(on the other hand, he doesn't change the pooey nappies, and I do. According to him that makes us even, and I'm not about to challenge that!)
Here's the thing though. He's about to start college. Next week to be exact.
Then it'll be me that has to do at least *some* cooking during the days he's at college.
I'm terrified! I actually manage to burn chicken nuggets!
Even if/when I do cook something myself he can't help himself. Comes in and checks the heat of the hob, stirs things, tastes them, adds seasoning and such. What on earth is he going to think when I'm cooking my way, without him around to help out?
At least it's just 3/4 days a week... otherwise I may end up scarring us all for life!
Or at least giving us all food poisoning.
Who's the chef in your house? What's your favourite meal? Come on, dish the dirt! (Badum..chhhhh!) ;)

I am the cook around my house. My husband can't even manage a toasted cheese sandwich. It is sad really. My favorite dish up my sleeve is my lasagna. Mmmmmmmm it is scrummy.
Actually, we have the exact same situation! I learnt to cook enough to not kill myself with it, but by no means am I good at it. I can do curries, and things from jars, maybe add a little seasoning but nothing too much else it WILL go wrong unless the recipe book told me to. So the man does the cooking and he's brilliant at it and we'll leave it that way, just wish he'd get the cleaning up after himself thing down :p
I am the book, although MadDad is great in the kitchen too, he just doesnt often have the time, but he makes home made pizza's with the boys every Sat
I do all the cooking during the week. On weekends I rarely cook we have takeaways, and hubby cooks the kids breakfasts. He also cooks himself and the kids breakfast during the week too. If they want it and he has time!
When we first lived together I'd say he he cooked for the first 5-6 years we ate out nearly every single night. Living in Sydney the food was cheap and fab, then he taught me, and I took over, BIG MISTAKE lol he constantly makes comments about what I make and how it could be better, he says he's trying to help me but really he's just shitting me LOL I am quite a good cook now, but I can't cook without a recipe or direction I am never sure how to substitute things or what goes with what. I am not massively passionate about cooking. I do enjoy cooking shows however!
My fave dish that I cook and cook bloody well and even guests and husband says it's amazing is Teryaki Salmon with all the trimmings. YUMMEH
Ah cooking lol! Well having lived away from home for 4 years I had to learn to cook some things and I learned how to cook from my mum first then my best friend later on lol!
I love to make stir frys and mexican food! Still love the classics like mac and cheese though! :D
My favourite thing that I can make has to be my Spaghetti Bolognese! :D
I loved your fajitas btw when I was there! :D
If I was married to anyone else, we would all have either long since starved to death or been poisoned.
In my opinion there's nothing wrong with frozen pizza and chips (I usually put them in the oven before serving them).
That said, I LOVE to eat....my fella works 3 longs days per week, so four days per week we eat like kings. The rest of the week...well....we survive...
XXX
I'm the day-to-day cook. I am responsible for making sure that we always eat. Occasionally the hubby cooks. For him it's an "event". He is very good but there is lots of drama and won't go near the kitchen when he's in it!
Honestly, I'm a good cook. I just don't like to do it. Kessa LOVES to cook. However she is the messiest person on the planet when she's in the kitchen. And if she's cooking she thinks I should be doing the cleaning up.
Well, I guess that's not that bad a deal. ;-)
Mmm Lasagna... I love that stuff. I can do toasted sandwiches at least! ;)
Hehe that sounds like us, although D will clean up after himself most of the time... ;)
Oooh home made pizzas... may need to attempt them. Think they can be done by a non-cook? ;)
Oooh that sounds delish!
I think I'm very similar to you, though I am happy to let D do as much cooking as he likes! lol :)
Give me a recipe and I can follow it to a tee, but I wouldn't have a clue about what seasonings would work with it/what wouldn't etc!
My fave is fajitas too, but I can't make em any more cause Dean can't eat em! >_<
Thank god, I was beginning to think I was the only one!! Yay for being crap together! lol ;)
Ahh I wish D would leave me to it in the kitchen sometimes, but he just can't stay away!
I am hoping to get a slow cooker soon, your recipes sound awesome, and to just be able to leave it all day would be perfect! lol
I'm lazy too, which is probably more of the reason I don't do the cooking than cause D is hugely better than me or anything, I just don't have the energy by the end of a 6am start day!
I have my 'mother' hat on! This is the perfect chance for you to get to grips (a little) with this cooking lark. Tell Dean that you his support with it & as long as you promise not to poison the family, it will be fun!! (Just make sure you have some ready meals in the freezer in case!)
I'm the chef, Nat hates cooking. He can be trusted to prep all the vegies for me however, so we work well together.
I'm the cook. Hubs can cook, probably, but he doesn't know how. He has no feel for it - has to follow a recipe to the letter, can't cope if he has to make adjustments. If he cooks dinner, which I make him at least once or twice a week, it's generally something out of the freezer into the oven, maybe with some potatoes...
And getting everything ready at the same time? No chance...
I think you're right here, it's got to be done! :) x
That sounds a bit like me n D, but in reverse! lol ;)
*looks shamefully at the ground* that's me to a tee, the oven stuff... really need to start doing more proper cooking I think!
I'm going to be posting some easy, batch cooking recipes soon - my staples, as it were. You should pop over to the blog once they're up! I'm no chef, but home cooking with fresh food is the best!
Awesome, I will make sure to look out for it! :)
Hubby's the cook at our house. He's like your Dean, if I'm at the stove, he's constantly checking on me, especially if it's something he usually makes. I can cook, but I rarely get the opportunity. Besides which, he does all of the shopping, so invariably if I'm left alone in the kitchen to make something, I'll use things that were intended for different dinners. So by making one I ruin three. I think I'll just let him handle it! :)
